must read:We Will Beg Obasanjo, Says Lamido

Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State on Tuesday emerged from a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, giving an indication that the Peoples Democratic Party stakeholders would beg former President Olusegun Obasanjo who dumped the party on Monday.
Lamido, who is the North-West Coordinator of Goodluck/Sambo Presidential Campaign, told State House correspondents that Obasanjo remained the father of all.
He said Jonathan and all the state governors were creations of the former President.
He explained that it was only appropriate that “when a father is angry with his children, the children should beg him.”
Lamido said, “Baba (Obasanjo) is more than a party man. He is an icon, a national symbol and a leader and an inventor, a creator of all the institutions today in Nigeria from the President to the governors who are his own sons, are all his creations.
“And so, when a father is angry with his own children, we will only say we are sorry to him. But then, we cannot be renounced for whatever it is.
“If you do any political DNA of our blood, you will find his (Obasanjo’s) blood in us. No matter what we are, we may not be able to live up to his expectations.
“We might have made some mistakes, but abandoning us is not the solution because the country is first before anything else. So, he is our Baba even up to the President.
“Baba is our baba no matter what. He is angry with us, but then, what do we do? He gave us the life at a time when Nigerians were fighting us, he stood for us. Since 2011, in 2007, he stood firm for us.
“He is our father. And so, if we made some mistakes, we are only human because we are heading human institutions. And I think by the time he reflects, how could he abandon his own children like that. Wherever we are, we are right in his heart. He feels for us, he cares for us.”
When asked to be specific on whether they would go and beg Obasanjo to return to the party, Lamido said such issue was not the kind he would announce publicly.
“When there is some kind of misunderstanding between a father and a child, you don’t go to NTA or any other media to say you are going to do this.
“I mean the bond between us is so strong. I know he is equally pained. I know what he is going through because he is our father, but I will not tell you the strategy because when he was producing us, you were not there, when he was making us, were you there?,” the governor said.
When told that some party chiefs had already said they would not miss the former President, the governor said Jonathan who he described as Obasanjo’s first child had not said so.
“But then, the first child is the President, did he say so?,” he asked.
When asked again if Obasanjo’s constant criticisms of the President did not worry him, Lamido said “when parents get old, they tend to manifest signs of old age.”
He added, “What I am saying is that all of us have parents. When we were born, they pepped us, gave us their love, gave us everything. By the time they get old, naturally, there is what they call role reversal. We became the parents and they became the children. So, what is wrong if our parents begin to manifest those signs of old age?”
Lamido insisted that despite all the perceived setbacks, the PDP would still win the forthcoming elections.
He said, “What is this opposition in Nigeria? You must know Nigerian history. Nigeria cannot be governed by an aggregate of pain, anger and frustration.

LORRY LOAD OF FOREIGNERS INTERCEPTED IN ABIA STATE

The Nigerian Immigration Service, Abia State Command, has intercepted a luxury bus conveying 112 passengers, including 42 foreigners at the Abia Tower Junction of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
The suspects were traveling from Kano to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, when they were intercepted.
Comptroller of Immigration in charge of the state, Mrs. Augustina Opara, said the arrest was effected after her agency received a tip-off that a bus with suspected aliens were in the state.
She said, “After thorough investigations and screening of the occupants of the 52-seater luxury bus, 42 out of the 112 passengers were discovered to be without valid travel documents.

The comptroller said arrangements were being perfected to repatriate the suspects within 48 hours, explaining that they had no legal rights to be in the country.
She restated the commitment of her officers and men to ensure that no foreigner without proper travel documents infiltrated the country, especially as the elections gathered momentum.
Opara further said that the agency had started mopping up all illegal immigrants in Abia State as part of efforts to rid the state of possible security threats ahead of the elections .
She warned transport operators to endeavour to ascertain the identity of their passengers and report those with suspicious identities to security agencies.
The comptroller also appealed to border communities to always report the presence of foreigners to the security agencies for necessary action.
Later in an interview with our correspondent, one of the suspects, who identified himself as Isa, said he was a cobbler and was travelling from Niger Republic to Port Harcourt where he hoped to make a better living.
Another suspect, Abiru, said he was a nail cutter and was coming to Nigeria for the first time; while Almustapher, another foreigner, also said he was a cobbler. ........

Oil Marketers Association Kick Against Reduction In Diesel Price

The Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) has kick against the reduction of the price of automotive gasoline (AGO), otherwise known as diesel, under the current exchange rate at the foreign exchange market where one dollar exchanges for N205.
The group insisted that any reduction in price of the product will only happen when the exchange rate of naira stabilizes.
Executive Secretary of MOMAN, Obafemi Olawore, who disclosed this in Lagos over the weekend said that as long as naira and dollar parity was not stable, it would be difficult to reduce the pump price of diesel.
“As at Jan. 27, the landing cost of diesel, using the exchange rate of N171.36 and the landing cost of diesel was N89.77. Using the exchange rate of N181.77, the landing cost of diesel was N96.87 and using the N200 exchange rate at present, the landing cost of diesel will be N100.98.
If we are able to hold down the exchange rate, the investors will be able to plan.
If we are not careful and the dollar continues to go up as it is doing, if it gets to N250 per dollar, there is no way Government can reduce the price of diesel, without causing a further increase in the exchange rate,” he said.

must read:Buhari Promises To Tackle Insurgency

The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), promised to reclaim and rebuild the towns seized by Boko Haram.
Muhammadu Buhari lands in Maduguri
He made a claim in the source of his campaign rally in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, Punch reports.
Speaking at the Shehu of Borno’s palace, the former military Head of State said that dealing with insurgency would be a matter of key importance for him.
“I was here in 1975 as governor of the defunct North-East states, I’m happy that I received a befitting welcome; if elected, I will focus on tackling the persistent insecurity affecting the North-East, it is not easy as the damage has been done.
“Your Royal Highness, God willing if APC government is elected, all towns under Boko Haram control will be liberated and rebuilt. It was unfortunate that commercial activities were paralysed following the insecurity. In the past, hundreds of trailers loaded with goods took off from Maiduguri to various neighbouring countries, but presently the reverse is the situation.“Boko Haram ideology contradicts Islamic principles, because Islam does not allow senseless killings of innocent souls. It is unfortunate that innocent persons were being killed in mosques, churches and their houses. God willing, if APC government is elected we will restore the confidence in governance.”
Borno monarch, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, commended Buhari over his intention to focus on restoring peace in the North-East and Nigeria.
It is worth mentioning that Buhari’s rally was marked by unfortunate development. Six people were feared to have lost their lives in a stampede.
It was also reported that hundreds of APC supporters chanting pro-Buhari slogans set ablaze the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign office

Obasanjo Explains Why He Dumped PDP

Reactions won’t strop tracking the yesterday’s exit of Nigeria’s former President, Olusegun Obasajo, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
After having served 8 years in the party, OBJ announced his quit and publicly tore his membership card saying he would no longer stay in politics. Following the unpleasant development the Ogun chapter of the PDP announced the expulsion of the politician from the ruling party.
Commenting on the situation, Chariman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, said the former President had the right to dump the party adding however that he would not be missed. Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, was outraged by OBJ’s behaviour and called him “a man without honour”.
In the evening of February 16 the PDP issued an official statement on the incident, in which the party expressed sadness over the move. But what does the newsmaker himself has to say about his decision?
Obasanjo yesterday took to a Twitter account allegedly belonging to him (@SegunObasanjo)and shared several tweets.
Obasanjo, famous for his criticism of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, said:
A party card is the least of my preoccupation to what is good for Nigeria. There’s nothing I can’t sacrifice for the interest of my country.
— OLUSEGUN A. OBASANJO (@SegunObasanjo) February 16, 2015
Being patriotic is the will to sacrifice ANYTHING (even my life) for the interest of Nigeria but not my life for the interest of a party.
— OLUSEGUN A. OBASANJO (@SegunObasanjo) February 16, 2015
My first preoccupation is what is best for Nigeria; Nigeria first, party second and any other thing third.
— OLUSEGUN A. OBASANJO (@SegunObasanjo) February 16, 2015
He took a swipe at Buruji Kashamu’s personality:
I have national & international standard to maintain. For this reason I’d rather stand alone than be in the same political party with Kashamu
— OLUSEGUN A. OBASANJO (@SegunObasanjo) February 16, 2015
…and Jonathan:
I’d rather tear the PDP membership card than sit down and let Jonathan use PDP and corruption to tear my beloved country apart.
— OLUSEGUN A. OBASANJO (@SegunObasanjo) February 16, 2015
Obasanjo reinstated his commitment to the national interests and the interests of Nigerians:
I’d rather sacrifice my political party for the interest of Nigeria than sacrifice my country for a political party led by a drug baron.
— OLUSEGUN A. OBASANJO (@SegunObasanjo) February 16, 2015Meanwhile the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) that was attacked in one of OBJ’s tweets, yesterday blasted the ex-leader calling him an embarrassment to the military.
It was thre reaction to a statement credited to Obasanjo that the elections were postponed to enable Jonathan use the service chiefs for tenure extension.

Osinbanjo: APC To Create 1 Million Jobs For Igbo Youths

The Vice-Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Yemi Osinbanjo was in Enugu recently to promote the manifesto of his party.
Professor Osinbajo who paid a courtesy call on the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, His Lordship Calistus Onaga, lamented the high rate of unemployment in the country, saying Nigeria is in dire straits, adding that the country was sliding dangerously into a failed state.According to Nigerian Tribune, he lamented that 80 per cent of young graduates were unemployed, 40 per cent of non-graduate youths unemployed and over 125,000 kids die of related ailments.
The former Attorney-General of Lagos State bemoaned that pervasive corruption was rife and further alleged that President Goodluck Jonathan seemed unconcerned over the unbridled corruption under his watch.
He exonerated the presidential candidate of the APC, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), saying he has no agenda to Islamise the country.“The 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria defines Nigeria as a secular state and most importantly, as a military head of state, Buhari did not join Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) or used draconian powers at his disposal to Islamise the country.
“Our programmes are designed to fight corruption, provide maximum security and to revamp Enugu coal so as to create one million jobs for South-East youths,”he said.
Speaking during the visit, the Catholic Bishop pleaded with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow the peoples’ votes to count during the election.
Professor Osinbajo later met students from the South-East zone at Nike Lake Resort, Enugu, where he showcased the programmes of the APC to them.It will be recalled that Gen. Buhari met with Catholic Bishops recently in Abuja, where he affirmed that he had no personal religious programme and as a practicing Muslim, he doesn’t share the views of any extremist group.

AY Writes Open Letter To IG Of Police On The Piracy Of His Movie, 30 Days In Atlanta

Yeah, it’s happened to comedian turned movie producer, Ayo Makun,
too. His popular movie, 30 Days in Atlanta, which is Nigeria’s highest grossing cinema movie of all time, has been pirated.
The pirates are now selling copies of the movie on the streets of Lagos. Below is his open letter to IGP.
Read Letter Below:-
Dear sir,
It is with the deepest sorrow that I pen these words. I have never understood the true meaning of the saying “only the one wearing the shoes feels the pain”, till recent times. Since the advent of Independent Producers, piracy has become the bane of the industry because as the saying goes ‘monkey de work, baboon de chop’.
The excitement that greeted the movie industry through the Box-Office success of 30 Days In Atlanta has quickly turned to sorrowful awe as I heard the news that the result of my sweat and sleepless nights has been sold by a traitorous miscreant, yet unknown, to a dubious marketer in Alaba.
The news that would have made not just more Nigerians but also foreigners invest in Nollywood, has been dampened by the nefarious activities of intellectual pirates who hide in Alaba.
I have contacted Silverbird Film Distribution (whom I submitted the master of my movie to), Mr Afam Ezekude DG National Copyright Commission and Mr Ahbu Ventures who heads a session of Alaba where the Criminals are operating, Yet nothing visible has been done to take my movie off the street.
I have always heard of the risk faced by honest producers of loss of revenue due the activities of the incessant piracy cabals operating freely, without fear of the law in Nigeria and within the past few weeks, this has been my experience as I heard of the leak of my movie to various nefarious elements.
Enough is enough of the economic hardship that is created for hardworking movie producers by some of these Alaba pirates who would do anything to reap from where they did not sow.
Sir, it has been argued that the impressive figures posted as revenue accrued to Nollywood are a mere drop in the ocean if the malaise of piracy is properly nipped by the effective implementation of the anti-piracy laws by the relevant governmental agencies.
Alaba is part of Nigeria and as such the activities therein ought to be governed by the laws of Nigeria.
Even the laudable financial facilities made available by Mr President to be accessed by producers towards the development of the industry both as an employer of labour and a growing contributor to the annual revenue of Nigeria will be for naught if the piracy vampires continue to have a field day.
The continued dominance of piracy will either lead to producers refusing to make more movies for fear of loss or that producers who go ahead to make movies using such funds will then be forced to become indigents because they will unable to pay back the loans accessed due to these vandals.
Sir, Nollywood is a multi-billion-naira industry and the opening of new cinema houses across the country is indeed cause for the celebration for both producers and lovers of Nigerian movies but the major challenges of the Nollywood industry from its birth till date has been the issue of transparent distribution channels and the malaise of piracy.
No more should a miscreant be celebrated or allowed to rape intellectual properties of honest hardworking citizens with impunity while the owners of the property impotently look on.
No more should movie producers and other intellectual property owners scrabble to quickly make the little they can before ‘Alaba boys’ get their hands on the content and turn a goldmine into a dunghill.
I urge you to use your good office to use your actions in arresting the illegal spread of 30 Days In Atlanta as a standard for changing the status quo and letting the miscreants know that no one is above the laws of Nigeria.
I wait your intervention sir.
Thanks
AY

Nigerian Military Retakes Monguno, Other Communities From Boko Haram

The Nigerian Army have completely secured Monguno, Marte and other communities in the North of Borno State from Boko Haram occupation.
It would be recalled that Boko Haram fighters had launched an offensive on Monguno from different directions and eventually captured the town on January 25, 2015.
A statement issued Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, said that a combined operation spearheaded by the Air Force, had completely cleared Monguno, Marte and other towns in the general area of terrorists’ presence.
Olukolade added that some terrorists with arms and ammunition were captured by troops during the latest operation.
According to him, the troops also captured truckloads of food items such as rice and beans and other logistics supply meant for members of the sect.
“Troops in a military operation spearheaded by highly coordinated air assaults have completed the mission of clearing terrorists from Monguno and environs this morning.
“A number of terrorists as well as truckloads of rice, beans and other logistics meant for supply to the terrorists operating around Baga have been captured in the course of operation.
“Casualty inflicted and arms recovered as well as other outcome of the operation in Munguno, Marte and other communities already secured, will be determined after the ongoing cordon and search in the environs.
“The air and land operation is continuing with aggressive advance towards other designated communities and locations meant to be cleared in the ongoing offensive against the terrorists”, he said.

Gunshot Rocks Buhari’s Campaign In Borno

Sounds of gunshots charged the air on Monday at the presidential campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Maiduguri, Borno state, as security agents tried to control the wild crowd at the Ramat Square, venue of the rally.
The crowd hailed Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of APC, as he arrived the venue in the presence of Kashim Shettima, governor of Borno state, and other top APC members in the state, after which he made his way to the podium.
But he had hardly sat for 10 minutes when his security aides escorted him out of the venue for unknown reasons.
Angry to see him leave, the crowd went on rampage, attempting to force their way into Buhari’s convoy in a manner to prevent him from leaving.
At that point, his security aides began shooting into the air, while the crowd responded by pelting the soldiers.
Buhari’s campaign team had dithered over the choice of a date for his campaign rally in Borno due to security concerns.
When Monday was eventually picked, the state governor declared a holiday, saying it wanted to afford citizens the opportunity to welcome the retired general en masse.

Obasanjo’s Exit: We Remain Focused – PDP Releases Statement

Press statement from the PDP regarding Obasanjo’s exit today.
Read Statement Below:-
The leadership Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has received the news of the decision of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to withdraw his membership of our great party.
We have also carefully examined the circumstances and the reasons adduced for this unfortunate decision.
While we concede to the inalienable rights of every citizen to hold opinion and to decide who to associate with, we are however deeply saddened that Chief Obasanjo, a revered leader of our party, our first Presidential flagbearer whom the PDP offered the platform to rule our nation for 8 years, could decide to abandon this party at this critical point in time.
This is especially as Chief Obasanjo, who was also the Chairman of the highest advisory organ of the PDP, the Board of Trustees (BoT) discountenanced all pleas by elders and leaders of our great party with regard to his reservations on certain issues within our fold.
Many Nigerians are still bewildered as to what manner of provocation could have led a former President to lose his composure and go to the extent of tearing the membership card of the party that he once led.
Indeed, the PDP is hugely at loss as to how the decision and action of the former President who had enjoyed the benefits of being elected to the highest position of leadership will assist in deepening our democracy and stabilizing the polity.
It is our considered opinion that no matter the provocation, a statesmanly disposition from a person of Chief Obasanjo’s status could have encouraged our citizens and help in stabilizing system.
We believe however, that what this country needs now is patriotic actions that engender national unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence of our people irrespective of political, ethnic and religious persuasions.
The overall interest of our nation and wellbeing of our citizens must remain paramount and above all personal and group interests.
Finally, we direct all our members across the country to remain focused on our campaigns and not to be distracted on this issue. With an array of credible candidates led by our Presidential flagbearer, President Goodluck Jonathan, we are sure that we will emerge victorious come March 28 and April 11, 2015 general elections.
Signed:
Olisa Metuh
National Publicity Secretary

58 People Have Been Killed Due To Pre-Election Violence In Nigeria – Report

TheNational Human Rights Commission(NHRC)says no fewer than 58 people have been killed in election-related violence in 22 states from December 3rd, 2014 till date.
Chairman, Governing Council of the Commission,Chidi Odinkalu, made the revelation on Friday in Abuja while representing a report entitled:Pre-election Report and Advisory on Violence in Nigeria’s 2015 General Elections.
Odinkalu said that within 50 days from December 3rd, 2014, the commission had confirmed 61 incidences of election violence with the majority of the cases recorded in three key economic and politically significant states.
“In Lagos, we have tracked at least 11 incidences producing 22 dead people for each incident, an average of 2 people killed over a span of just 52 days.
In Kaduna State, we have three incidents and nine killings; Rivers has six incidents, including the detonation of explosives and attacks on courts.
This degree of pre-election violence is unacceptable, we have seen too much bloodshed and this must be stopped,” he said.
According to him,“if this trend continues, it will lead the country into more trouble and so this is more than a report, it is an advisory because it calls on all the leaders to rise to the challenge.”
He said the political leaders must send a message loud and clear to their teeming supporters that the forthcoming election was not a call to battle but a contest between brothers and sisters.
“On March 28 and April 11, Nigeria will for the 5th time in 16 years and the 8th time since independence in 1960, undertake the closest and most competitive election in its 54-year history.
This is an advisory addressed to Nigeria’s leaders, politicians, communities, citizens and friends. It explains why the country must turn the page on a long and worsening history of election violence,’’ the NHRC’s governing council chairman said.
Odinkalu stated that the commission had received 10 petitions for adjudication in relation to election-related violence.
He said that the commission had established an Election Violence incidence Centre (EVIC) to enable it collate information on election violence and seek intervention where necessary or ensure accountability.
According to him, the commission would not hesitate to mention the names of anybody found instigating or perpetrating electoral violence.
“If we continue on that trajectory, this report demonstrates that it will not only endanger Nigeria and the human rights of its citizens but the peace and security of an entire region.’’
If elections are not violence free, we will be inviting the International Criminal Court into the affairs of our country,” he said.
He further stated that Nigerians must be able to vote in peace, as the right to vote was a human right and citizens, through the exercise of their right, conferred legitimacy on their government.
The Executive Secretary of the commission,Bem Angwe, had earlier stated that the commission was determined to ensure that Nigerians of voting age were able to exercise their franchise in peace.
Angwe also appealed to Nigerians to support the commission in its determination to ensure that the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians were met.

Patience Jonathan Mourns Bayelsa Women Who Died In Car Accident

Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Sunday sympathised with the government and people of Bayelsa State over the death of some prominent women from the state in a motor accident in Rivers State.
Although the two-paragraph statement by her spokesman, Ayo Adewuyi, did not give the circumstances surrounding the death, an online report said the women, including the wife of the Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, Elizabeth Oguru, died after a visit to Mrs. Jonathan.
The statement read, “The First Lady, Dame Dr. Patience Faka Jonathan wishes to commiserate with the Government and people of Bayelsa State, over the death of some prominent Bayelsa women in a motor accident around Elele in Rivers State, on their way to Bayelsa.
“The First Lady prays the Almighty God to grant the souls of the deceased eternal rest and the families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
The online report said the accident occurred in Ahoada on the East-West Road in Rivers State. It gave the names of others who died in the accident to include Consider Amadi, a former Woman Leader in Ogbia; Clara Abila, a grassroots politician; Immaculate Amasimua, a former Commissioner in the Bayelsa State Civil Service Commission; Zimbra Goma, a former Commissioner for Women Affairs in Bayelsa State; and Hon. Ruby Benjamin, a former member of the House of Assembly representing Brass Constituency 1 of Bayelsa State.
They were said to be returning from Port Harcourt in Rivers State where they had gone on a visit to Mrs. Jonathan.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission in Bayelsa State, Vincent Jack, confirmed the development.
Jack spoke with newsmen on the telephone on Sunday. He, however, said only nine persons died in the fire that engulfed the vehicle in which the victims were travelling.
The accident was said to have occurred when the tyre of an oncoming Toyota Sienna exploded and the car rammed into the bus carrying the women.
The bus burst into flames immediately. The coaster bus in which the women were travelling was said to have bore the inscription: “Women For Change Initiative,” Mrs. Jonathan’s Non- Governmental Organisation.
