Nnewi’s history dates back to the fifteenth century when migrants from from Ora-nri, Aro, Agbaja, Abatete, and other surrounding Igbo settlements Ikenga and Ndoni It is believed that Nnewi as a kingdom has been in existence since the 15th century. Four communities namely Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewichi make up the kingdom with district further divide into villages. Otolo is the political Head while Uruagu attends to all traditional spiritual matters. Each village is made up of‘Umunna’ family units with the premise of the head family serving as the ‘obi’ where crucial family matters are discussed and decisions taken. The town spans over 1,076.9 square miles (2,789 km2) of rain forest alluvial land. Nnewi town is located about 21 kilometers south east of River Niger at Onitsha. Historically, the Nnewi was the headquarters of the Southern Onitsha district which by 1976 metamorphosized into Nnewi Local Division comprising of 14 towns. Today, Nnewi is the only town Nnewi North Local Government Area (LGA), with Nnewi North, Ekwusigo, and Idemili Sorth as surrounding LGAs. Surrounding towns are Ichi and Oraifite by the west, Ozubulu, Ukpo, Utu and Amichi by the south, Azigbo and Awka-Etiti by the east, Ojoto by the north east and Nnobi by the north. Edo is the supreme deity of all the Alusi (Igbo for deity) which has historical links with the Idemili deity. The Edo shrine is at Nkwo Nnewi. The towns of Nnewi, Ichi and Oraifite made up the Anaedo state. Anaedo communities have common ancestries, beliefs and traditional value systems. Nnewi is an industrial city in Anambra State and it is the second most populated town in the State. Population of Nnewi is over 391,227 2006 census. It is also a major trading and manufacturing centre in Nigeria. As a result of its high commercial activities, the town has attracted millions of migrants from other neighboring states and regions. Nnewi is known to have produced a diversified range of businessmen and entrepreneurs from transporters, to spare parts dealers and manufacturers. Prominent firms in the city includes the Ibeto Group, Adswitch, Cutix, Omatha, OCE filters, Innoson Group, Life Vegetables Industries
